Solana Halves Block Times with 200ms Upgrade

Solana to Reduce Block Time to 200 Milliseconds This Friday

  • Solana will cut its block production time from 250 milliseconds to 200 milliseconds on Friday, completing a series of upgrades.
  • The upgrade is scheduled for epoch 1053, expected around 15:00 UTC.
  • This change allows Solana to target five block-production opportunities per second, up from the previous 2.5.
  • The reduction process began on August 21, starting with a decrease to 350 milliseconds.
  • Subsequent reductions occurred on August 28 (to 300 milliseconds) and September 18 (to 250 milliseconds).
  • The technical proposal, known as SIMD-0525, also limits the computing work validators can include in each block.

Reducing the time between blocks enhances transaction processing efficiency for trading applications, wallets, and exchanges by providing more frequent updates. This upgrade is part of Solana’s efforts to improve network performance significantly.

With the final upgrade reducing block times to 200 milliseconds, Solana aims to optimize its blockchain capabilities effectively. (Source)
