NFT Market Decline: South Korean Giants Exit

Several South Korean retail giants, including Lotte and Hyundai, are exiting the non-fungible token (NFT) sector amid a market slowdown. This strategic shift involves companies focusing back on their core business strengths.

Lotte, having launched its NFT services in May 2022, plans to shut down its NFT shop operations by July 2. This platform, integrated into the Lotte Home Shopping app, used fiat KRW to ease non-crypto user access. Notably, Lotte’s NFT Shop featured collaborations with corporate character Bellygom and virtual influencer Lucy.

Hyundai Department Store, which also launched NFT wallet services in 2022, is discontinuing these offerings, opting to exit the market. Shinsegae has similarly scaled down its NFT operations. This trend reflects a broader shift in South Korea, where financial regulators are moving to classify certain NFTs as virtual assets.

The decision by these retail giants to refocus on their core competencies underscores a significant pivot in their digital strategies. This move may influence how other businesses approach emerging technologies in the future.
