Bitcoin Proposal Launches Enhanced Privacy Feature

Shielded Bitcoin Introduces Private Transfers Without Altering Bitcoin Rules

  • The cryptography lab [[alloc] init] unveiled Shielded Bitcoin on Sept. 24, allowing private transfers without a soft fork.
  • Shielded Bitcoin transactions are approximately four times larger than typical BTC payments, running about 700 vbytes.
  • The system uses encrypted notes and zero-knowledge proofs to hide transaction details while using the existing Bitcoin network as a public bulletin board.
  • A second white paper is in development to address how bitcoin enters and exits the shielded system.
  • Witness encryption, a key component of the system, remains experimental with significant progress but still large data requirements.

Shielded Bitcoin aims to enhance privacy by layering encrypted transactions over the existing Bitcoin protocol without altering its fundamental rules or requiring consensus changes. This method allows for private financial activity while maintaining transparency in timing and transaction fees onchain.

Despite its potential, Shielded Bitcoin remains in research stages due to challenges like entry and exit mechanisms and experimental witness encryption technology.
