Bitcoin Seizure: 500 BTC Wallet Cracked

Ireland Recovers $32M in Bitcoin from Dormant Wallet

  • Irish authorities accessed a dormant wallet containing 500 BTC, valued at approximately $32 million (€30 million).
  • The total hoard consists of 6,000 bitcoin seized from Clifton Collins in 2019, now worth about $378 million (€360 million).
  • Europol’s European Cybercrime Centre provided technical expertise to unlock the first of twelve wallets.
  • Collins had printed private keys on paper hidden in a fishing rod case, which was accidentally discarded and incinerated.
  • The High Court in Dublin ruled these bitcoins as proceeds of crime and forfeited them to the state.

Irish investigators have unlocked a significant portion of Clifton Collins’ seized Bitcoin assets with Europol’s assistance, marking a major breakthrough in recovering funds deemed criminal proceeds.

This recovery effort highlights the potential for dormant cryptocurrency assets to appreciate significantly over time, with the total value now dwarfing initial estimates due to Bitcoin’s rising market value. (Source)
