Bitcoin Theft: Ex-NCA Officer Owes $2.4M

Ex-NCA Officer Sentenced for Bitcoin Theft and Ordered to Repay $2.4M

  • Paul Chowles, a former National Crime Agency officer, was sentenced to over five years in jail for stealing Bitcoin.
  • Chowles stole a total of 50 bitcoins from a seized law enforcement wallet in connection with the Silk Road 2.0 investigation.
  • The stolen bitcoins were valued at approximately $79,250 at the time of theft in 2017 but have since appreciated significantly.
  • Financial investigators recovered only part of the stolen assets, leading to a confiscation order totaling more than $2.38 million (£1.8 million).
  • Recovered funds will be used by the CPS Proceeds of Crime Division to compensate victims.

Paul Chowles exploited his position within the National Crime Agency to steal seized cryptocurrency, which has since increased substantially in value, resulting in a hefty repayment order exceeding $2 million.

This case underscores law enforcement’s commitment to recovering criminal proceeds and compensating victims, as evidenced by the significant confiscation order against Chowles for his breach of trust involving Bitcoin. (Source)
