Bitcoin Vault Loses $6M to Mystery Signers

$6 Million Missing from Unclaimed Crypto Vault on Base Protocol

  • On October 4, an exploit was detected on a vault held on Base, Coinbase’s Ethereum layer two protocol, resulting in losses exceeding $6 million.
  • Security firms traced approximately 1,783 wstETH out of the vault, which were converted from Aave receipt tokens.
  • The vault is controlled by a mysterious Safe requiring three of seven signatures, with none of the signers publicly identified.
  • The drained proxy address is identified as an Openzeppelin transparent proxy linked to a Safe created about a year ago.

An unidentified entity exploited a vault on the Base protocol, leading to significant financial loss without any known claimants or public identification of those responsible for the Safe controlling it. The incident highlights vulnerabilities in contract whitelisting and authorization processes within decentralized finance platforms.

With over $6 million unaccounted for and investigators tracing the token movements but not identifying the human operators behind them, this event underscores ongoing challenges in securing decentralized financial infrastructures. (Source)
