Mercado Bitcoin Vows to Cover Customer Hack Losses

Brazil’s Mercado Bitcoin said a Nov. 2 attack drained about $38 million in cryptocurrency from its operational wallets. Analyst Emmett Gallic estimated more than $46 million in suspicious transfers, but the figures have not been reconciled, and it is unclear whether they cover the same transactions or assets.

The exchange suspended deposits, withdrawals and platform access while it conducts security checks. It promised customers they would not lose assets because of the incident and said $11 million linked to the breach had been blocked. Blocking assets does not automatically return them, and the exchange has given no definite reopening date. Preliminary analysis suggests attackers gained transaction-signing credentials, but the entry point has not been established.
