Proposed Tesla-SpaceX Merger Could Create Bitcoin Powerhouse

Elon Musk said on Oct. 20, 2026, that independent committees at Tesla and SpaceX were examining a possible merger after shareholder requests. He supports the idea but cannot take part in negotiations because of his roles and ownership stakes in both companies. He said there is no guarantee the committees will agree, and a deal would need approval from holders of 50% of all Tesla shares outstanding, not just a majority of votes cast.

The source says the companies hold a combined 30,221 bitcoin, valued at about $2.54 billion at prices above $84,000. A merger would combine existing holdings, not amount to a new bitcoin purchase. Tesla still does not accept bitcoin payments, despite a 2025 Cambridge estimate that sustainable sources supplied 52.4% of electricity used by surveyed mining operations; Musk’s stated condition also required an improving trend.
