Quantum Computing Record Raises Bitcoin Security Stakes

Quantinuum said its Helios quantum computer reached a logical error rate of five errors per million operations, ten times lower than its previous record. The result came from a specific error-correction benchmark, not a demonstration of a large-scale, general-purpose quantum computer. Significant engineering challenges remain, and the company’s fault-tolerant Apollo system is still planned for 2029.

The result does not show any ability to break Bitcoin’s cryptography, and no existing quantum computer can do so. Researchers have estimated that about 6.9 million BTC could be vulnerable to a future attack because their public keys have been exposed. Moving Bitcoin to quantum-resistant signatures could require larger signatures, wallet upgrades and network-wide coordination; owners of dormant holdings may be unable to move their funds.
