Bitcoin Strategic Reserve: Key Hurdles Identified

In a recent Bloomberg interview, CoinShares’ McClurg proposed that Bitcoin (BTC) be included in America’s strategic assets, viewing it as a “global currency for the Internet.” He highlighted Bitcoin’s borderless nature and its potential to mitigate inflation risks.

McClurg noted that the U.S. dollar, unbacked since the 1970s, faces unchecked inflation risks. However, he acknowledged challenges, such as the need to address the U.S. deficit first. McClurg emphasized that any reserve strategy should also include assets like gold and foreign currencies.

Major hurdles include the approximately 200,000 Bitcoin currently held by the U.S. government and the recent sale of 29,800 BTC worth $2 billion. McClurg warned that ongoing deficit concerns may hinder new acquisitions.

Despite these challenges, McClurg and Senator Lummis believe a Bitcoin strategic reserve could help stabilize the economy.
