BitMEX, a leading crypto exchange, transferred over $800 million worth of Bitcoin in two large transactions amid a volatile market. These transactions led to a daily outflow of over 22,000 BTC, significantly reducing the exchange’s Bitcoin reserve.
According to Arkham Intelligence, the transactions included 11,303 BTC worth $624 million and 4,503 BTC worth $249 million. This shift contrasts with a previous seven-day net inflow, now showing a net outflow of 8,900 BTC.
The large outflows suggest institutional buying or adjustments to BitMEX’s insurance funds. BitMEX has been upgrading its wallet system since June 2023, moving Bitcoin from legacy addresses to new wallets for better block space usage.
These movements came during heightened market activity, including the German government’s sale of over 9,000 BTC and Mt. Gox’s repayment plan. Additionally, recent U.S. employment data influenced market sentiment, potentially leading to more interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve.
This strategic move by BitMEX highlights its ongoing efforts to improve financial security and efficiency. Long-term, it may increase investor confidence in the exchange’s stability and operational integrity.
