The Danish Financial Supervisory Authority (DFSA) plans to ban unhosted Bitcoin (BTC) wallets as part of its Decentralized Finance (DeFi) guidance. This aligns with the upcoming Market in Crypto Asset (MiCA) regulatory framework set to be partially implemented soon.
The DFSA is concerned about unregulated platforms, emphasizing that all crypto service providers must be regulated. Denmark’s move will prevent exchanges and platforms from offering Bitcoin wallets to Danish customers unless they are regulated in Denmark.
Recently, the European Banking Authority (EBA) completed technical standards for MiCA, enforcing high financial standards across the EU. This includes changes in liquidity provisions and recovery plans, particularly affecting stablecoins pegged to the US Dollar.
Critics argue that these regulations could stifle innovation in the crypto space. Mikko Ohtamaa and SEC Chairman Gary Gensler believe that overregulation could squeeze digital assets out of existence. Ohtamaa suggests that the DFSA’s approach might aim to ban all cryptocurrencies indirectly.
This development is strategically significant as it underscores the growing regulatory scrutiny in the crypto industry, potentially reshaping its future landscape.
