Gold Surges Over Bitcoin Amid Rate Cut Bets

Renowned economist Peter Schiff predicts that gold will outperform Bitcoin amid expectations of triple rate cuts by the U.S. Federal Reserve in 2024. This comes after the U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) showed cooling inflation on July 11.

Schiff highlighted gold’s performance, noting a surge of over $30, trading above $2,400 following the CPI data. He believes the Federal Reserve seeks a “cover” to cut interest rates, which he argues will lead to higher future inflation. Schiff remains skeptical about Bitcoin’s sustainability, despite its recent gains.

Schiff also pointed out that gold stocks like the VanEck Vectors Gold Miners ETF (GDX) and Junior Gold Miners ETF (GDXJ) hit new 52-week highs, suggesting more room for growth in the gold market.

The U.S. CPI data showed a deceleration in inflation to 3% in June, down from 3.3% in May, sparking market optimism. The CME FedWatch Tool indicates an 81% probability of a rate cut in September, with increased expectations of a third cut in 2024. This shift in market sentiment underscores the strategic importance of gold in the current economic landscape.
