Sen. Cynthia Lummis praised Bitcoin and criticized Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) in a July 13 interview with Fox Business. The Wyoming Senator, known as Congress’ “Crypto Queen,” argued that Bitcoin could strengthen the US dollar globally while labeling CBDCs as a tool for government surveillance.
Lummis’s advocacy for Bitcoin includes promoting individual Bitcoin wallets and opposing retail CBDCs. She is also a critic of the U.S. Department of Justice for prosecuting companies like Tornado Cash for unlicensed money transmitting.
Former President Donald Trump also opposes CBDCs, calling them “very dangerous.” Despite his past criticisms of Bitcoin, Trump now holds a cryptocurrency portfolio and sells non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
Proponents of CBDCs argue they can speed up transactions, provide financial services to the unbanked, and enhance payment security by reducing fraud. Various central banks are exploring CBDCs due to declining cash use and the rise of digital assets.
Lummis’s stance reflects broader debates on the future of digital currencies and their impact on the financial system. Her position underscores the strategic importance of defining the role of digital currencies in the modern economy.
