Bitcoin-Rich Countries Selling Billions in Crypto

The U.S. government has a significant stockpile of 213,543 Bitcoin (BTC) from criminal seizures. Despite this, it has a history of selling its Bitcoin holdings at inopportune times, resulting in potential losses of billions of dollars.

In 2014, the U.S. sold 50,000 BTC for $19 million, now worth over $3.1 billion. Recent sales include 9,861 BTC related to Silk Road for $215.5 million in March 2023. The U.S. plans to sell around 40,000 BTC in several batches.

This approach contrasts with El Salvador’s pro-Bitcoin stance. Other countries like China, the U.K., and Germany also hold significant BTC amounts. Disposals by these nations could impact Bitcoin’s market price.

The strategic handling of Bitcoin reserves could rival central bank gold holdings by 2030, illustrating the long-term significance of these governmental decisions.
