Bitcoin Transfer: U.S. Moves $240m to Coinbase

The U.S. government moved $240 million worth of Bitcoin from a Silk Road vendor to Coinbase, causing Bitcoin to fall by 2%. The 3,940 BTC were originally seized from narcotics dealer Banmeet Singh in January.

Silk Road, a dark web marketplace created by Ross Ulbricht in 2011, was shut down by the FBI in 2013. In 2022, U.S. law enforcement confiscated around 50,000 BTC from Silk Road.

In March 2023, the government sold $216 million in BTC on Coinbase Prime, despite regulatory scrutiny. The SEC has charged Coinbase with operating an unregistered securities exchange, but Coinbase has denied these allegations.

The U.S. government continues to rely on Coinbase for liquidations, impacting the crypto market. This event underscores the significant role of government actions in cryptocurrency dynamics.
