The trustee of the failed crypto exchange Mt. Gox announced that repayments in Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash will start in July 2024. Nearly a decade after its collapse, creditors will receive 142,000 BTC, 143,000 BCH, and ¥69 billion (around $432 million).
Mt. Gox, once the world’s largest Bitcoin exchange, halted operations in 2014 after losing 850,000 BTC to theft. The repayments will be processed in collaboration with cryptocurrency exchanges and in compliance with global financial regulations.
This marks a significant milestone in the crypto world, addressing a long-standing issue of lost assets. The impact on the market remains uncertain, but the move is seen as a critical step toward restoring trust in cryptocurrency exchanges.
Overall, these repayments underline the importance of security and regulatory compliance in the evolving crypto landscape.
