Bitcoin Moves 2000 Rare Casascius Coins

Two Casascius Coins Activate, Unlocking $179 Million in Bitcoin

  • Two dormant Bitcoin Casascius coins were activated, releasing over $179 million after being inactive for more than 13 years.
  • One coin was minted in October 2012 when Bitcoin was valued at $11.69, while the other was minted in December 2011 at $3.88.
  • The December coin represents a theoretical return of approximately 2.3 million percent, excluding minting costs.
  • Only a limited number of these physical coins exist, with just six of the highest denomination (1,000 BTC) ever made.
  • Each coin contains an embedded paper with a digital value and is protected by a tamper-resistant hologram.

Casascius coins were created by Mike Caldwell between 2011 and 2013 and are considered highly collectible within the Bitcoin community. The activation of these coins does not necessarily indicate immediate market flooding as holders may choose to retain their assets for security rather than liquidation.

The recent activation highlights the historical significance of these collectibles, with one coin’s value now reflecting a staggering increase since its minting date in December 2011 at just $3.88 per Bitcoin.Source
