Bitcoin turns 18: Has it grown up?

Satoshi Nakamoto posted the Bitcoin whitepaper to a cryptography mailing list 18 years ago, according to the article. Bitcoin has since become an asset held by traditional financial institutions, but the article says questions about its security and the concentration of ownership remain.

A proposed upgrade, BIP-360, would reduce certain vulnerabilities to quantum computing, but it has not been adopted and would require community agreement. The article says a reported $6.3 billion Binance hack renewed concerns about exchange security. It also questions whether transaction fees can eventually support miners as block subsidies decline: fees made up just 0.67% of miner revenue in the 90 days to Oct. 4.
