Rootstock says Bitcoin lending, yield could drive institutional demand

Bitcoin infrastructure developer RootstockLabs says lending, yield generation and balance-sheet financing could bring new institutional demand for Bitcoin. Its report estimates that 1.5% of Bitcoin’s supply participates in lending and Bitcoin-native finance, while identifiable institutional investors hold roughly 3.9 million BTC.

The report models a hypothetical case in which institutional holdings double to 7.8 million BTC and 5% of those holdings earn a 5% annual yield, producing 19,500 BTC a year. That figure is potential returns on existing holdings, not a forecast of new demand. Report author Tony DiCarlo said financialization carries risks, including defaults, custody failures, legal enforceability problems and leverage amplified by Bitcoin’s volatility; he also warned that institutional adoption could concentrate holdings among a few custodians.
