Bitcoin Endorsed by Hong Kong’s SFC Chief

Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission chief, Julia Leung, praised Bitcoin’s resilience as an “alternative asset” at the Greenwich Economic Forum. She noted that Bitcoin has survived multiple cycles of “boom and bust” over the past 15 years, proving its staying power.

Leung emphasized that her support is more for Bitcoin’s underlying technology, distributed ledger technology (DLT), which she believes can enhance efficiency and reduce costs in asset distribution and custody. She also discussed the potential of tokenization and blockchain networks to improve financial inclusion and ownership.

Hong Kong is positioning itself as a crypto-friendly hub, recently approving spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs. However, authorities are strict about unlicensed exchanges, threatening to shut them down. The region’s strategic focus on crypto underscores its long-term commitment to advancing financial technology.
