Core Scientific Inc., a major player in Bitcoin mining, declined a $1 billion buyout offer from AI startup CoreWeave Inc. on March 28, 2023. The offer, valued at $5.75 per share, was deemed to significantly undervalue Core Scientific.
Despite rejecting the takeover bid, Core Scientific has signed a 12-year, $3.5 billion agreement with CoreWeave to supply 200 megawatts of infrastructure for high-performance computing (HPC) operations. This deal will generate an estimated $290 million in annual revenue, helping Core Scientific diversify its business and reduce risk while maintaining exposure to Bitcoin’s growth.
The decision reflects the company’s confidence in its growth potential and the increasing demand for data center space. This move highlights the ongoing consolidation in the crypto industry, with larger firms like Bakkt and Robinhood also making strategic acquisitions.
Core Scientific’s strategy positions it to capitalize on the booming crypto market and high-performance computing needs, underscoring its long-term growth and stability.
