Russia’s crypto mining equipment supplier Intelion plans to invest over $130 million to develop AI data centers. The company, headquartered in Moscow, aims to purchase server equipment to build these centers, with the first phase expected to be operational in Q4 2024 in the Samara region.
Despite a 2022 U.S. ban on selling Nvidia’s A100 chips to Russia, Intelion already has servers equipped with these chips. The company is shifting from importing mining rigs to providing AI-related cloud services, leveraging its existing resources.
Another notable project, BitRiver’s AI-focused data center, is set to launch in Russia in the second half of 2024 with a capacity of 100 megawatts. Intelion’s strategic pivot marks a significant move in Russia’s expanding AI industry, underscoring the country’s growing focus on advanced computing technologies.
