Argentina to Mine Bitcoin with Stranded Gas

In Argentina, state-owned YPF’s subsidiary, YPF Luz, has partnered with Genesis Digital Assets to mine Bitcoin using stranded natural gas, as of May 8, 2024. This innovative project aims to convert wasted gas from oil fields into a valuable resource for Bitcoin mining, leveraging 1,200 machines for the operation. A standout feature of this initiative is its potential to cut carbon emissions by up to 63%, showcasing Bitcoin mining’s capacity to enhance environmental sustainability.

This venture aligns with Argentina’s pro-Bitcoin stance under President Javier Milei, marking a significant step towards integrating cryptocurrency into the country’s energy sector. By utilizing stranded gas, YPF Luz and GDA not only demonstrate a novel approach to reducing carbon footprint but also position Argentina as a leader in combining energy management with digital currency mining. The project exemplifies a growing global trend of harnessing underutilized energy sources for Bitcoin mining, offering a model for others to follow in the pursuit of eco-friendly mining practices.
