Justin Sun, founder of Tron, expressed interest in purchasing the German government’s $2.3 billion Bitcoin stash on July 4. The German authorities obtained the nearly 50,000 BTC earlier this year from the piracy site Movie2k.to and have since sold down to 40,359 BTC.
Sun’s proposal aims to buy the BTC off-market, minimizing market impact. This move could help alleviate the current selling pressure, which has contributed to Bitcoin’s 20% decline over the past 30 days, reaching a two-month low of $57,089.
While some community members welcomed Sun’s move, others criticized it as self-promotional. Experts like Mikko Ohtamaa and Simon Dixon questioned the feasibility of the deal, citing regulatory compliance and due diligence concerns.
Sun has the financial capacity, with $7 billion in personal assets, but his ongoing legal issues with the US SEC add complexity. The strategic importance lies in the potential market stabilization and regulatory implications of such a transaction.
