Major cryptocurrency exchanges Kraken, Coinbase, and Bitstamp returned 3000 BTC, worth $172 million, to the German government. The assets were previously transferred from the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA).
Bitcoin’s price partially recovered, surpassing $57,000, as a result. Experts believe this move prevented market disruption by stabilizing supply. The return highlights the challenge of liquidating large crypto assets without market impact.
However, exchanges like Flow Traders and B2C2 Group still hold 9400 BTC, raising concerns about future market pressures. The German government now controls 38,826 BTC, valued at $2.23 billion.
German authorities began seizing BTC linked to criminal activities on July 8, 2024, sending 4000 BTC to various exchanges. This action, though criticized, underscores the complexities of managing seized digital assets.
The return of 3000 BTC marks a crucial step in handling seized cryptocurrency, offering a temporary market stabilization but posing long-term risks if remaining assets are sold.
