Bitcoin Drives Brazilian Banks Crypto Expansion

Brazilian Crypto Market Surges Amid Regulatory Clarity

  • Brazil’s crypto market reached R$505.5 billion ($98.7 billion) in transactions in 2025, a fivefold increase from R$94.9 billion in 2020.
  • Itaú offers clients Bitcoin, Ethereum, and USDC among its lineup of fifteen crypto assets.
  • Banco do Brasil’s Bitcoin and Ethereum services have moved over R$11 million ($2.1 million) since January.
  • Central Bank filings as of March show no proprietary crypto holdings by Brazilian banks despite growing client offerings.
  • Corporate transactions accounted for R$497 billion ($97 billion), or about 98% of Brazil’s total crypto volume in the past year.

The significant growth in Brazil’s crypto market is attributed to regulatory changes, including the Legal Framework for Virtual Assets established in late-2022, which provided clearer guidelines for banks and firms handling cryptocurrencies.

This clarity has encouraged banks like Itaú and Banco do Brasil to expand their offerings without holding proprietary assets themselves, indicating a cautious yet progressive approach towards integrating cryptocurrencies into traditional banking systems.(Source)
