Nova Scotia Supreme Court Justice John Bodurtha ordered a laptop containing a Bitcoin wallet returned to the family of William Sandeson, who is serving a life sentence for murdering Taylor Samson in 2015. Bodurtha ruled that prosecutors had not proved the Bitcoin was linked to the killing or the drug transaction. He ordered that about C$5,000 in cash seized from Sandeson’s apartment not be returned, finding it was offence-related property.
Sandeson has valued the Bitcoin at C$8,000 to C$10,000, while a lawyer for Samson’s family, which brought a separate wrongful death lawsuit, has said it could be worth more than C$200,000. Global News did not report how much Bitcoin the wallet holds.
