Moody’s Approves Sky Protocol Stablecoin Rating

Moody’s Assigns First Stablecoin Credit Rating to Sky Protocol

  • Sky Protocol received a B3 long-term counterparty risk rating from Moody’s, marking the first such rating for a stablecoin protocol.
  • As of September, Sky Protocol had approximately $90 million in equity against about $10 billion in managed assets.
  • Moody’s highlighted Sky’s low capitalization and confidence-sensitive stablecoin liabilities as significant credit weaknesses.
  • The protocol manages the dollar-pegged USDS and DAI, with around half of its assets in stablecoins and tokenized money market funds.
  • Sky’s governance structure as a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) contributes to elevated operational and regulatory risks.

Sky Protocol, formerly known as MakerDAO, has been given a B3 rating by Moody’s, reflecting both its potential and challenges within the DeFi space. The agency noted that an upgrade is possible if Sky improves its capital ratio above the threshold of 2.5% while maintaining profitability and liquidity levels.

The assignment of this rating indicates Wall Street’s increasing engagement with decentralized finance structures like DAOs, despite inherent risks associated with their operations and governance models. Source
