Ethereum DAO Approves Upgraded Naming System

ENS Proposes Upgrade to Naming Protocol on Ethereum Mainnet

  • ENS founder Nick Johnson submitted a draft proposal to activate ENSv2, the upgraded naming protocol.
  • The upgrade would freeze new registrations on the original ENS registrar while allowing existing domain holders to renew their names.
  • New .eth registrations will be temporarily unavailable during the transition, which may last several hours.
  • The proposal requires at least a 1% voter participation, equating to 1 million ENS votes, for approval within a seven-day voting period.
  • If approved, there will be a minimum two-day timelock before execution of the upgrade.

The proposed activation of DAO governance for ENS aims to enhance domain management and permissions through a redesigned registry architecture. This transition is crucial as it will allow existing users to maintain their domains while streamlining future registrations.

The draft proposal for activating ENSv2 must receive majority approval from voters representing at least 1 million ENS votes. If successful, this upgrade could significantly improve user experience and functionality in domain management.(Source)
