Ethereum Exploited for $2.1M in Smart Contract

Aztec Connect Exploit Results in $2.1 Million Loss

  • Aztec Connect, a deprecated DeFi platform, was drained of approximately $2.1 million in crypto on Sunday.
  • The exploit involved a mismatch in transaction verification on Ethereum, allowing the attacker to withdraw unbacked balances.
  • The attacker stole various assets, including 909 Ether (ETH) and over $270,000 in Dai (DAI).
  • This incident is part of a larger trend, with around $44 million stolen from at least twelve exploits this month.
  • Aztec Connect was deprecated in March and had its deposits halted as resources shifted to the new Aztec Network.

The attack highlights vulnerabilities in abandoned DeFi contracts, which can still be exploited long after they have ceased operations. The Aztec Labs team stated that they hold no control over the system’s smart contracts, which became immutable upon deprecation.

In total, the exploit resulted in losses of about $2.1 million from Aztec Connect’s smart contract amid a broader trend of significant crypto thefts this month.(Source)
