China Bans Asset Tokenization in Hong Kong

China Advises Brokers to Pause Offshore Tokenization in Hong Kong

  • The China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) has given informal guidance to at least two major brokerages to halt real-world asset tokenization offshore.
  • Hong Kong is advancing with its digital asset initiatives, including a new stablecoin licensing regime launched in August.
  • Observers believe this move represents a cautious approach rather than a reversal of institutional demand for tokenized assets.
  • In June, GF Securities’ Hong Kong arm introduced “GF tokens,” and Shenzhen Futian Investment issued a digital bond worth $70.2 million.

The CSRC’s guidance aligns with Beijing’s cautious stance on digital assets as Hong Kong continues its push towards becoming a global hub for virtual assets. This pause is seen as a calibration of policy rather than an opposition to tokenization.

Despite the temporary halt, the demand for tokenized credit and payment financing remains strong, and Hong Kong’s regulatory framework continues to support institutional growth in this sector. ( Source)
