Brazil’s Receita Federal is intensifying scrutiny on international cryptocurrency exchanges such as Binance, Coinbase, and Kraken. This initiative mandates these platforms to disclose their operational methods and customer services to ensure compliance with local tax laws and anti-money laundering regulations.
The move comes as digital asset usage in Brazil surges, with reported crypto holdings reaching 133.6 billion reais ($24.6 billion) from January to July 2023, a 36.6% increase from the previous year. This heightened oversight aims to foster transparency in a sector still awaiting a concrete regulatory framework, expected by the end of 2024.
Andrea Chaves, Deputy Secretary of Inspection, emphasized the need to verify that exchanges meet tax obligations and legal standards. Wagner Lima, a risk management coordinator, noted the importance of reviewing collaborations between foreign exchanges and local providers to ensure compliance with a 2019 regulation on information sharing.
The new ordinance will require detailed operational data but will exclude customer-specific and transactional information, adhering to current laws. This scrutiny is crucial as declared holdings through foreign exchanges saw a 51.2% increase from the previous year, highlighting the growing significance of these platforms in Brazil’s market.
This strategic move by Brazil’s tax authority underscores the long-term importance of robust regulation and transparency in the burgeoning cryptocurrency sector.
