India’s Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) fined Binance $2.25 million on June 19 for violating local anti-money laundering (AML) rules and failing to register with the FIU. Binance has not made any public statements regarding the penalty.
India is one of the fastest-growing crypto economies, boasting the highest adoption rate as of 2023. Previously, Binance faced a $2 million penalty and a four-month ban from the FIU. Before the January ban, Binance controlled over 90% of India’s crypto trading volume, driven by traders seeking to avoid tax implications.
In March, the Ministry of Finance required all crypto businesses to register with the FIU and comply with AML rules. By December 2023, 28 cryptocurrency firms had registered. India’s regulatory landscape for crypto remains divided, with calls for international collaboration and a comprehensive framework.
This event underscores the strategic importance of regulatory compliance for crypto exchanges operating in fast-growing markets like India.
