Gate launched a “Proof of Security” framework, reporting that 88.26% of its total assets were in cold storage and 11.74% in hot wallets. It said its cold storage could cover 104.58% of customer assets even if its hot wallets were drained, but the data is still undergoing independent review.
The disclosure followed an attack on Binance’s hot-wallet infrastructure in which about $6.36 billion was stolen, according to TRM Labs. Coinbase said more than 99% of customer assets are in cold storage, while Upbit reported 99.17% of its assets there as of September 2026. The ratios are not necessarily comparable because reporting periods and asset bases may differ; cold wallets can also be exposed through weaknesses in signing systems, access controls or transaction approvals.
