Former FTX executive Ryan Salame received a seven-and-a-half-year prison sentence, exceeding the five to seven years prosecutors sought. This decision surprised many, especially as Salame had cooperated by turning against his former boss Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF).
Salame’s defense argued he was unaware that FTX misused consumer funds, but this didn’t fully capture his actions. The main charge was campaign finance fraud, as Salame donated tens of millions to politicians using customer funds without consent. Notably, he was a top donor in the 2022 midterm elections, pledging $22 million to Republican candidates.
The judge’s decision reflects the severe misuse of funds, including lavish personal expenditures like a private jet. U.S. Attorney Damian Williams emphasized the sentence’s role in upholding trust in American elections and financial integrity. Salame’s harsher sentence might also be due to his refusal to testify against SBF last year.
