Ryan Salame Sentenced: Former FTX Exec Gets 7.5 Years

Former FTX executive Ryan Salame has been sentenced to 7.5 years in prison for his role in illegal activities related to FTX and Alameda Research. This exceeds the prosecutors’ request of five to seven years, despite Salame’s legal team seeking a sentence of no more than 18 months.

Salame pled guilty to violating campaign finance laws and operating an unlicensed money-transmitting business. U.S. Attorney Damian Williams emphasized that Salame’s actions undermined public trust and the integrity of the financial system.

Salame’s involvement with FTX began in 2019, and he later became the CEO of FTX’s Bahamas subsidiary. The FTX crash in 2022 was due to mismanagement, lack of liquidity, and illegal use of customer funds.

Salame agreed to forfeit nearly $6 million in assets as part of his plea deal. The broader implications of this case highlight the significant legal and financial consequences of operating outside the law in the cryptocurrency industry.
