Morpho Secures $50M Funding from a16z, Coinbase

Decentralized crypto lender Morpho has secured a $50 million strategic funding round, backed by a16z, Coinbase Ventures, and other top crypto venture capital firms. On August 1, 2024, Morpho announced that Ribbit Capital led the round, with participation from notable investors like Pantera Capital and Variant.

The funding aims to enhance Morpho’s network decentralization and support global growth for financial infrastructure as a public good. Launched two years ago, Morpho has evolved from an interest rate optimization layer for Aave and Compound to Morpho Blue, a layered architecture for lending protocols with built-in risk management.

CEO Paul Frambot emphasized the importance of support from top VCs for the protocol’s growth in the decentralized finance space. The funds will also enable Morpho to extend grants to contributors building its DeFi infrastructure. Morpho’s potential extends beyond current DeFi markets, aiming to underpin a truly global, internet-native financial system.

This strategic funding round follows an $18 million round in July 2022, also led by a16z and Variant. The long-term significance lies in Morpho’s potential to transform the financial landscape by providing decentralized infrastructure for a global economy.
