Ethereum Futures Surge: Spot ETF Approval Impact

The approval of spot Ethereum ETFs in the US sparked a significant surge in Ethereum’s derivatives market, particularly in futures. This regulatory breakthrough was hailed as a major milestone for crypto, providing legitimacy and accessibility for Ethereum.

In early 2024, ETH futures open interest (OI) was under $7 billion, but by late April, it surged to $13.01 billion as traders anticipated the ETF approvals. On May 28, futures OI hit an all-time high of $17.12 billion.

Binance led the market with $6.24 billion in futures OI, followed by Bybit and OKX. Institutional interest was evident with CME’s $1.30 billion in OI.

Despite a lower increase, options OI peaked at $13.44 billion, with Deribit seeing an all-time high options volume of $3.38 billion on May 22.

The significant rise in derivatives highlights Ethereum’s growing market liquidity and the strategic importance of spot ETF approvals in enhancing market dynamics.
