Albuquerque’s newly effective Virtual Currency Ordinance requires businesses to stop operating or hosting cryptocurrency ATMs immediately and remove the machines by Dec. 5, according to the city. It also bans cashier-facilitated cryptocurrency transactions. Residents may still lawfully own, mine and privately transfer cryptocurrency through internet-based exchanges and personal digital wallets.
The city said violations may bring $500 daily fines and revocation of a business license. The restrictions also apply to property owners, landlords and retailers that host the machines.
