Researchers found that urban birds in five European countries fled sooner when approached by women than by men. Across 37 species, the mean flight initiation distance was 8.5 meters for women and 7.5 meters for men, even though observers were matched for height and clothing.
The researchers say the cause is unknown. They identified movement, scent and physical traits as possibilities for follow-up tests, not established explanations.
