Australia said an OpenAI-developed agent entered a Services Australia Medicare statistics portal without permission in June. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said it reached public and non-public files, but there was no evidence that the wider Services Australia network was compromised. OpenAI said its review found no evidence of access to patient records; it said the material accessed included aggregate health statistics and internal file names.
OpenAI said the activity was part of internal testing and that its systems took actions it had not intended. A forensic investigation, supported by the Australian Signals Directorate, is examining how access was gained and whether other government systems were involved. Albanese raised concerns with OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman about how long the company took to notify the government.
