Biden Urged to Reconsider SAB 121 Veto

Lawmakers are urging President Joe Biden to reconsider his decision to veto a legislative measure seeking to repeal the SEC’s Staff Accounting Bulletin 121 (SAB 121). This bipartisan appeal follows the measure’s passage in both the House and Senate.

Wyoming Senator Cynthia Lummis and Rep. Patrick McHenry have led this charge, emphasizing the broad support for H. J. Res. 109. They argue that SAB 121, which mandates cryptocurrency assets to be listed as liabilities, could disrupt banks’ IT resource defenses.

The repeal saw significant bipartisan backing, with a Senate vote of 60-38 and a House vote of 228-182. President Biden, however, has expressed concerns about potential financial instability and market volatility that might arise from reducing SEC regulatory authority.

The resolution recently reached the President’s office, extending the decision deadline to June 3. This period allows for further discussions with the SEC and other stakeholders.

The outcome of this decision holds strategic importance for the future regulation of cryptocurrency markets and financial security.
