Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin shared an experimental privacy wrapper for his AI agent harness on October 16, 2026. It routes each conversation through a separate Tor circuit and uses zkAPI payments, random cover traffic and local prompt rewriting to limit identity and data exposure when using remote language models.
Buterin said the system was becoming usable, but starting a new conversation still caused noticeable delays. He said cover traffic offers reasonable protection against passive observers, while Tor offers limited protection if an AI provider colludes with a Tor entry node to analyze or manipulate request timing. He suggested a dedicated mixnet as a possible alternative.
