Digital Yuan Launches Bold Adoption Plan 2026

China’s PBOC Unveils Action Plan for Digital Yuan Development Starting in 2026

  • The People’s Bank of China (PBOC) will implement a new action plan effective January 1, 2026, to enhance the Central Bank Digital Yuan (digital RMB) management system.
  • As of November end, there have been approximately 3.48 billion transactions using the digital currency, totaling 16.7 trillion yuan.
  • Over 230 million individual wallets and more than 19 million institutional wallets have been opened for the digital yuan.
  • The multilateral platform mBridge has facilitated over 4,000 cross-border transactions, amounting to under 387 billion yuan.
  • PBOC’s deputy governor Lu Lei confirmed that commercial banks will offer interest on digital yuan wallet balances to encourage adoption.

This initiative aims to standardize the issuance and management of the digital yuan while stabilizing China’s financial system and upgrading its payment infrastructure. As pilot projects expand, oversight is tightening amid concerns over virtual currency speculation.

With a cumulative transaction volume reaching 16.7 trillion yuan, the PBOC is positioning itself for significant advancements in its digital currency framework by implementing this action plan in early 2026.
