Anatoly Legkodymov, co-founder of Bitzlato, received an 18-month sentence for facilitating over $700 million in illegal crypto transactions, but won’t serve additional time due to time already served in custody. Legkodymov, who pled guilty in December 2023, was sentenced on July 18 by Judge Eric Vitaliano in a New York District Court.
Despite prosecutors arguing for a four-year sentence, the judge considered the harsh conditions of the Metropolitan Detention Center, where Legkodymov was held, including referencing two recent murders as a reason against more prison time.
The U.S. Department of Justice labeled Bitzlato a major player in dark web transactions and a haven for ransomware criminals. Legkodymov agreed to dissolve Bitzlato and forfeited claims to over $23 million in seized assets. Bitzlato’s transactions were heavily linked to Binance, whose founder Changpeng Zhao recently stepped down and faced legal repercussions.
This case underscores the growing scrutiny on crypto exchanges and their role in illicit activities, highlighting the need for stronger regulatory oversight in the sector.
