UniCredit CEO Andrea Orcel has endorsed the digital euro, provided that banks maintain their central role in its implementation. Speaking at a Mediobanca conference, Orcel stated that the success of the digital euro hinges on banks’ involvement, emphasizing it as a matter of European sovereignty.
The European Central Bank (ECB) aims to launch the digital euro to bolster the euro area’s resilience and strategic autonomy. Orcel argued that banks should serve as the infrastructure for the digital euro, similar to their role with physical cash, ensuring seamless integration and benefits for both Europe and banks.
ECB Executive Board member Piero Cipollone noted that commercial banks would manage digital euro services, with consumers enjoying free services while merchants face fees. The digital euro would become legal tender, enabling everyday transactions with central bank money, which Evelien Witlox of the ECB highlighted as advantageous for citizens and merchants alike.
The digital euro’s strategic importance lies in its potential to enhance Europe’s monetary sovereignty and support evolving financial models, making it a significant step for the continent’s economic future.
