Hackers Steal $2M from CoinStats AWS Infrastructure

CoinStats CEO Narek Gevorgyan revealed that hackers stole $2 million in tokens by attacking its AWS infrastructure. The breach, occurring in late June 2024, compromised nearly 1,600 hosted wallets.

Founded in 2017, CoinStats has raised over $3 million from investors like Hack VC and 6th Man Ventures. The hackers, allegedly with ties to North Korea, exploited a CoinStats employee through social engineering, leading to the download of malicious software on his work computer.

Gevorgyan assured users that the breach affected no more than 1% of CoinStats’ user base. The hackers sent fraudulent notifications to CoinStats’ iOS and Android users, redirecting them to a drainer website.

CoinStats is committed to supporting the victims and awaits final details from law enforcement for a complete post-mortem. This incident underscores the critical need for robust cybersecurity measures in the crypto industry.
