Iran’s central bank, Bank Markazi, will launch a pilot for its digital rial in July on Kish Island. This pilot allows banking customers and tourists to use digital wallets and QR codes for cashless transactions.
This initiative aims to modernize and simplify domestic transactions, enhancing payment security and efficiency. The Central Bank of Iran has been testing its digital currency since 2022, with a limited pilot starting in June 2023.
A standout feature of the digital rial is its ability to create new business models, especially in e-commerce and the digital economy. The digital currency aims to increase resilience in Iran’s payment infrastructure.
Despite sanctions from the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), Iran’s Informatics Services Corporation continues to develop this state-controlled digital currency using Hyperledger Fabric.
The digital rial could strategically strengthen Iran’s financial systems and digital economy, setting a precedent for other nations exploring similar innovations.
