Papua New Guinea Launches Digital Currency Pilot

Soramitsu Labs, a blockchain developer from Japan, plans to pilot a central bank digital currency (CBDC) in Papua New Guinea. This initiative, requested by the country’s central bank, aims to improve financial inclusion and security through economic digitization.

In 2020, Soramitsu introduced a CBDC in Cambodia, achieving over 10 million accounts by December 2023, covering 60% of the population. This success highlights the potential impact of their work in Papua New Guinea, a country facing financial inclusion and security issues.

Unique to this project is the use of a blockchain platform to create a “common platform for Pacific island nations.” This could ensure a traceable record for financial transactions, enhancing security and recovery in case of incidents.

The broader implications of this pilot are significant. It could set a precedent for other nations in the Pacific region, promoting economic stability and financial accessibility.
